Sustainable Design is the focus in 2008 as we explore the “greening” of all kinds of design – from cities to buildings to landscapes to products. Design For Life 2008 offers an amazing array of talent and experience; including presentations by 5 sustainability and design experts, a green building 101 workshop, a fun, fast paced designers showcase, and the 2007 Design Exchange Awards exhibit from Toronto. Workshops and Presentations:
- Green Building 101 - The Lighthouse Sustainability Centre from Vancouver presentsa two-hour, non-technical workshop for homeowners interested in learning how to “green” their home! Participants will gain a general understanding of green design ideas, issues and processes, develop a set of personal green goals for their home, and may purchase a practical resource workbook for a small fee. Confused about where to start, who to talk to and what questions to ask? Then this course is for you!
- Designer Six Pack!- A designer showcase, presenting established and emerging designers in all disciplines from the Okanagan Valley in a fast-paced presentation of up to 20 images from their portfolio in 6 minutes. Time limits are strictly enforced, which makes this hybrid of marketing, networking and peer review a formula for an entertaining and enlightening event. It’s intense; it’s fast, its fun! The Six Pack will be moderated by Sandra Kochan. Special thanks to event partners, the Okanagan Science and Technology Council and the Okanagan Institute.
- Sandra Kochanhas been interested in art, music and design for a long time. These interests provided plenty of solace and inspiration as her career path moved through law, wine and food, tourism and culture. She is currently the Public Art Coordinator for the City of Kelowna and enjoys the challenge of bringing more art into an urban environment. She helped organize the first Design for Life event in 2007 and is back on board this year as organizer of the ‘Film Lounge’ and moderator of the Designer Six Pack – a designer showcase, presenting established and emerging designers in all disciplines from the Okanagan Valley in a fun, fast-paced presentation of up to 20 images from their portfolio in 6 minutes.
- Interdisciplinary Design Panel- Moderated by Douglas MacLeod, where presenters from the weekend will discuss the principles and impact of sustainable design in the Okanagan Valley and take questions from the audience.
- Film Lounge - Take some time to check out our film lounge, featuring a series of short films and links to websites that relate to green design.
The Exhibit:
The Globe & Mail Design Exchange Awards celebrate the success of Canadian designers in the areas of Architecture, Fashion, Graphic Design, Industrial Product Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design. This year 35 awards were handed out to designers in 12 categories for projects completed in Canada, the U.S. and international cities. Established in 1991, the DXA’s promote Canadian design and excellence and recognize the critical role of design in all types of organizations, including commercial entities (large and small businesses), not-for-profit organizations and the public sector. Special thanks to the Okanagan Science and Technology Council for helping bring these awards to Life & Arts.
